No, I don't think racing is cruel. In fact, there are a LOT more horses injured in pastures, stalls, trailers, and paddocks than there are on the track while racing. Eight Belles was a gorgeous horse, and a great athlete, and it was a very unfortunate and unusual accident that occurred at the Derby. It's always sad when a horse is lost, but people don't hear about the horses that stepped in a squirrel hole in the pasture and broke a leg, or got into a major fight with another horse, and countless other injuries (some fatal) that happen to horses all the time. Pasture injuries have ended the careers of more race horses than track or training injuries ever have.
