Why Is it is exspensive to live in Oakland, or the bay area period?

Now, I know that Oakland, has some very bad areas, but like any major, big city, it also has some beautiful areas some of which I just love BUT I cant afford to live in them, and thats very frustrating. Why is it so damn exspensive?
