Why do musicians seldom release albums nowadays?

Back in the day (the 1960's) every artist or group released at least one album a year, and in several occasions two. Now the only band I know of releasing an album of new material every year is Of Montreal. Is it because it isn't profitable any more because so many people download their music illegally? Is it because music takes longer to make based on the popular trends? Give me some thoughts
