Building your own PC ..... advice please?

Being in the market for a new PC and being aware that the likes of PC World, Dell and the like remain very expensive even in todays recessed market, does it remain financially worthwhile to have a crack at building my own? And where can I source information to help me do this? Appreciate all views ..... cheers.
